Flint, Michigan (United States of America) – May 30, 2020
My ultimate goal in life is to capture emotions in a way that words aren’t always able to illustrate. I have always photographed happy moments in people’s lives, like a groom seeing his bride for the 1st time, or a couple expecting their newborn baby, but last night was the 1st time I photographed people who were frustrated, hurting, angry, and most of all, determined.
In light of the recent events and all the negativity we’ve been seeing on the news, I was unsure of how the Flint protest would unfold, but my husband and I still grabbed our cameras and walked along. As the evening carried on, seeing a community who has seen so much hardship and pain come together to show leadership, unity and strength regardless of religion, age and race was such a humbling experience in itself.
There was such a peace and feeling of hope in the air. When we reached the police station, the officers were lined up and everyone immediately took a knee. The Sheriff asked one question… «We are mad too! What can we do?» and the crowd responded, «Join us!». And when the police department took helmets off and dropped batons asking to join to march, they responded «Let’s go! We can walk all night!».
This was history. I felt it. This was the example. Leaders facing leaders, coming together in peace. Do I think we still have a long way to go? Definitely. Do I think this has solved the issue between police and unarmed black, human beings? No. But I do believe that this type of leadership is a positive step in the right direction and gives me hope for black men and women around the world and for all of humanity.

Il mio obiettivo ultimo nella vita è quello di catturare le emozioni in un modo che le parole non sono sempre in grado di illustrare. Ho sempre fotografato momenti felici nelle vite delle persone, come uno sposo che vede la sua sposa per la prima volta, o una coppia che aspetta il proprio bambino appena nato, ma ieri sera è stata la prima volta che ho fotografato persone che erano frustrate, ferite, arrabbiate, e, soprattutto, determinate.
Alla luce dei recenti eventi e di tutta la negatività che abbiamo visto sui notiziari, non ero sicura di come la protesta di Flint si sarebbe svolta, ma io e mio marito abbiamo ancora afferrato le nostre telecamere e camminato a lungo. Mentre la serata proseguiva, osservare una comunità che ha visto così tante difficoltà e dolore unirsi per mostrare leadership, unità e forza indipendentemente dalla religione, dall’età e dalla razza è stata un’esperienza che rende di per sé più umili.
C’era una tale pace e un tale senso di speranza nell’aria. Quando abbiamo raggiunto la stazione di polizia, gli agenti erano in fila e tutti si sono subito inginocchiati. Lo sceriffo ha fatto una domanda… «Siamo arrabbiati anche noi! Cosa possiamo fare?» e la folla ha risposto: «Unitevi a noi!». E quando il dipartimento di polizia ha tolto i caschi, ha lasciato i manganelli e ha chiesto di unirsi alla marcia, quelli hanno risposto «Andiamo! Possiamo camminare tutta la notte!».
Questa è stata la storia. Questo ho sentito. Questo è stato l’esempio. I leader di fronte ai leader, venendo insieme in pace. Penso che abbiamo ancora molta strada da fare? Sicuramente. Penso che questo abbia risolto il problema tra la polizia e gli uomini neri disarmati? No. Ma credo che questo tipo di leadership sia un passo positivo nella giusta direzione e mi da speranza per gli uomini e le donne neri di tutto il mondo e per tutta l’umanità.
